  1. Try dynamic stretching and static stretching. I have always done static stretching but then incorporated dynamic stretching into my routine and it has certainly helped. See article below.
  2. Threre is no magic exercise to improve flexibility. How old are you? The older you are, the less flexible your muscles are and harder it is to improve flexibility. Some people just have a better propensity for flexibility than others due to hereditary make up and physiological factors. I've practiced martial arts with some guys that stretched for years and achieved black belts yet could barely touch their toes. Their lack of flexibility was not due to a lack of trying, many factors including age and physiological factors prevented them from ever become very flexible. I wouldn't worry too much about your flexibility, keep stretching and working at it and you will be as flexible as your body allows, theres no special exercise. If you've been practicing for a year I would worry more about learning the forms, stances and strikes you need to in order to keep progressing in whatever style you are studying.
  3. If you are really concerned about flexibility, consider deep tissue massage. It will help to remove toxins in the muscles and joints that decrease flexibility. This, combined with stretching will help, but if you have suffered back or hip injuries like I have, you may never be able to achieve a full split.
  4. A really useful technique that most people don't know about is really light stretches. You do a normal stretch, but you do it so lightly that you can only just feel it. There are a lot of people who couldn't get there with ordinary stretching and achieved wonders with that.
