  1. get the book called "Drawing on the right side of the brain" by Betty Edwards its a classic http://www.amazon.com/New-Drawing-Right-Side-Brain/dp/0874774241/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1215835818&sr=1-1
  2. One exercise that we always did in art school was to just start drawing any object that you want, and don't worry about how bad it looks at first. Just draw as much of it as you can before you take a step back to look at it. When you look it over, instead of erasing the corrections, just completely start over. After you do this a few times (believe me you need to be patient) you will start to notice your skills getting better, and eventually there will even be small parts that you won't have to copy from life, but can see from your imagination. You will probably end up drawing and redrawing the same object a lot and might get frustrated, but believe me it will pay off. And as a side note, get a little sketchbook that you can carry around with you. When you see something that intrigues you, draw it, as you see it, don't worry so much about the skill, that's what sketch books are for, they aren't final. If you keep this up, all the practice will really pay off.
