Why is my cat freaking out at a pad of drawing paper?

My cat jumped up on the couch and started sniffing a pad of drawing paper. He was jerking his head back every few seconds after he was sniffing it. I put the pillow the pad was on near him, the pad of paper, and the pencil I was using, and he was most drawn to the pad of paper. No pun intended. What could this be?

1. It is just that it is a new smell, paper mills use chemicals to treat paper and that is what he is smelling
2. Its normal your cat has never seen it before that is all.He is figuring out what is my cat does that too!Its has new smell it is new to him he will get use to it.
3. It's just an attraction to him. I had a cat that used to love newspaper. She would see one laying around and get on it and love it to death. Of course, she had to find it before I could even read the darn thing.
