Drawing Exercises

Writing exercises to keep me from getting rusty?

I've been writing sketch comedy for a while now, and since graduating college I've been without a group to write and perform with. I'm working on putting a new group together. In the meantime, though, I'm trying to write something every day I can, just to keep myself fresh. However, sometimes it's hard if I don't have an idea already in mind when I sit down to write. Are there any writing exercises or books with writing exercises that you'd recommend (comedy or otherwise) just to keep me from getting stale? Thanks!

  1. Right, [haha, get it?! Oh crap...] you could do this kinda thing... this is probably fairly/completely irrelevant because it's nothing to do with writing comedies BUT what I have been told to do, in order to get some inspiration & creativity flowing when there is a lack of it, is to sit down and literally write whatever you see around you. You don't have to make it complicated [in actual fact, the point is to purposely NOT over complicate it at first by using too much description, etc]. Next you have to build on what you have written by adding a touch of description and so on & so forth. You can continue to add as much to a single sentence as you wish 'til you have some ideas bouncing around in your mind as to what phrases, metaphors, similes, etc. could be effective in certain situations. There lies the exercise ^ :-)
